Former President Donald Trump has criticized Kamala Harris’s reluctance to engage with the press, and claimed that her recent “softball” interview with MSNBC laid bare the vice president’s “evasiveness, incompetence, and delusion.”
Harris has done only one solo interview since becoming the Democratic nominee, a fact that Republicans have presented as evidence of her unpreparedness for the country’s most important – and conspicuous – political office.
On Thursday, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to criticize Harris’s recent sit-down with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle, writing: “Kamala Shows Us (Again) Why She Never Does Interviews.”
Trump’s post linked to an article on his website, subtitled: “Kamala managed to turn a softball interview into yet another humiliating failure.”
During the Wednesday interview, Harris attempted to contrast her economic vision with that of Trump, while also addressing issues like immigration and Trump’s recent remarks on women.
She criticized Trump’s extreme tariff plans, claiming that these would amount to a de facto “national sales tax,” as manufacturers pass on their increased costs to American consumers.
On immigration, Harris pointed to the bipartisan border security bill that Trump urged Republicans to axe earlier this year, and argued that her opponent does not want to address immigration and instead only hopes to use it for political purposes.
In line with her campaign’s focus on abortion and women’s rights, Harris also criticized the former president’s role in overturning Roe v. Wade.
“He also then chose three members of the United States Supreme Court who did as he intended, undid the protections of Roe v. Wade, and now in state after state you see laws being passed that do punish women,” Harris told Ruhle.
The article on donaldjtrump.com began by criticizing the choice of interviewer, claiming that Ruhle had “endorsed” Harris for president, and linking to a video of the host’s recent appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher.
In the clip, Ruhle argued that Harris could justifiably evade specific policy questions because “she’s not running for perfect, she’s running against Trump.”
The article went on to claim that Harris had “lied about President Trump’s tariffs,” and claiming that that the recently announced tariffs imposed on Chinese goods by the Biden administration were a continuation of Trump’s policies.
It continued by echoing a common Trump critique of the Biden-Harris administration’s record on immigration, and Harris’s alleged calls “for mass amnesty for the 20+ million illegal aliens she let into the country.”
It said that Harris had lied about her future administration’s tax plans, “pretended to care about manufacturing remaining in America” and that she acknowledged “destroy[ing] the American dream.”
“Perhaps her biggest lie of the night: insisting that Americans can trust her after she brought untold devastation and suffering she has unleashed over the past four years,” the article concluded. “Only a truly incompetent fool like Kamala could manage to turn a softball interview into a clinic on evasiveness, incompetence, and delusion all in one — but that’s exactly what she did.”
